Illness – An Epidemic

Health is a condition of mental, physical and emotional well being where infirmity and illness are absent. It is the state when you feel healthy and fit to the core. The definition of ‘health’ is related to the quality of life. It is the sum total of the components of health, which influences the existence, both short-term and long-term of a person. It is necessary for a person to be fit and healthy for his own sake, and for the sake of others.

The definition of ‘wellness’ is an inclusive entity that encompasses all the aspects of life where a person experiences normal functioning with no abnormality or deficiency. This means, there is need to have a sense of wellness from body, mind and soul. One must have the drive to become in shape, learn new things, acquire knowledge and wisdom, and live healthily. It also means that to attain the wellness state, a person needs help from several sources, especially the natural environment, health professionals, and the community.

The need for helping oneself to attain the optimal state of wellness cannot be underestimated or left to fate. The need to be healthy, to be fit and fine means that we have to take care of ourselves by following certain guidelines and practicing certain measures. It is through self-care that one can help people to achieve wellness. The three main aspects of self-care are exercise, meditation and yoga.

Health care has become the buzzword for many decades now. Health systems around the world are struggling to meet the demands for services. Health systems are organized on the basis of diagnosis and treatment of the different diseases and ailments. A common characteristic of most health care delivery models is the concept of primary prevention. In this concept, the focus is on preventive measures rather than treatment. This definition of health system is adopted from the international community.

Wellness programs are provided in schools and hospitals to promote healthful lifestyle and promote infirmity detection and cure. It is the duty of every citizen to practice good health habits. It is also important for every one to take care of his body through exercising and eating nutritious food. A well-rounded approach to life is adopted to ensure the total well-being. Studies have shown that a healthy diet, regular exercise, cleanliness and proper sleep lead to increased energy levels, better concentration and a better work performance as well as reduced risk of incidences of heart diseases, diabetes, stroke and other such health problems.

Stress can affect every aspect of our lives. The illness causes a person to lose energy levels which in turn results in an inability to think clearly. Mental dullness results in lesser productivity in the workplace and contributes to loss of jobs. Illness may cause depression and anxiety. Illness can also lead to other related health problems like ulcers, asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, skin disorders, eye problems, and arthritis.
